Manic Miner is perhaps THE game that started the platform game revolution. It was one of the very first games for classic computers that had more than one “level” so to speak. And not only did it have more than just one level – between the different versions of the game, there were hundreds of levels available for you to play and enjoy. And as I sit here and write this, I am in awe of the fact that it was remade with such style and class for the Nintendo DS and the DSI system, in the form of Manic Miner – The Lost Levels. And all you need to be able to play it is an R4 DS Card – a ds homebrew flash card for the DS and DSi system.

You main character, and the one you control in Manic Miner is Miner Willy. Your missing, should you choose to accept it, is to guide Willy through colorful, fun, bizzara, and extremely difficult levels collecting his keys. The game does not have your run of the mill baddies either. You’ve got to dodge mutant telephones, and killer penguins in order to make it to the next level. You must go through each level, timing your skilled jumps to avoid the bad guys and collect various keys that open up the next levels in the game. But be careful…. one missed jump means that Willy will inevitably fall to his death as he is captured by the killer penguins.

Each level is more difficult than the last, and in this remake, each level looks better than the last. As far as homebrew games go for the DS, Manic Miner is up there with commercial quality games. You will really think you went out and spent some $40.00 on this game. While the original Manic Miner, not the sequel, had only about 20 levels, this cool r4 ds card remake has over 150 different levels to play. It will keep you entertained for a long, long time. Over 150 levels all packed into one good looking homebrew game.

The sound effects and music are top notch, not at all what you would expect from a game that was made in the spare time of several developers. Visually, the game is a joy to look at and play. With excellent Nintendo DS quality graphics and animations, old fans of Manic Miner, and new gamers alike will keep playing and playing until the game has been completed.

Everyone that has a DS Flash card, like the R4 DS Card absolutely MUST get this game. It’s one of the most well made homebrew games every released for the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DSi.
